Introduction
The garden that Carla Blumberg started in 1982, by trucking in organic compost from her farm in Bertram, Texas, is still gardened today using only organic methods and practices. Although we buy the vast majority of our vegetables from conventional sources, we feature the vegetables, herbs and flowers that we grow, in our favorite soups, sauces, and vegetable side dishes, and as garnishes to brighten every plate.
When Carla's restaurant closed in late 1987, Elaine Martin and Dorsey Barger, who had dreamed of opening their own restaurant in an old house, knew they had found their home. They called their restaurant the 'Eastside Caféâ? to honor their new neighborhood and opened the doors on March 16th, 1988. The café featured a modest printed menu and Chef's Chalkboard Specials often highlighting vegetables and herbs grown in its own back yard.
