Drum & Monkey Kenn

The Drum and Monkey Pub is situated in the village of Kenn, and is one of the oldest pubs in the area. The pub got its name from the fairs that used to be held on the local moors and was used as a meeting place for travellers and country folk alike who came to do business. Many years later it was renamed the Rose and Crown. After restoration work it returned to its original name.

In 1830 the last public hangings the place of the crime took place in Kenn. Three local men (William Wall, John Rowley and and Richard Clarke) set fire to some hay ricks in retaliation for being informed on for selling cider without a licence. After assembling at the Drum and Monkey the Chief Constable, the High Sheriff, the Prison Governor, the Chaplain, the Magistrates and local Councillors formed an impressive procession. They marched past the church to the place of execution (at the meeting of Kenn Street and Duck Lane) where a great number of constables lined each side of the road for the VIPs to pass through. The prisoners were then brought to the gallows in an open wagon. The day ended with singing, drinking and dancing at and around the Drum.

The Drum is also featured in the book "Haunted Pubs of the South West". Our ghost is called Nellie No Change, a unique landlady known for miles around, whose friendly form appears now and again. She got her name from the fact that whenever she welcomed wealthy looking guests she would take their money with the words "there's no change" assuming they could afford it.
