Our Products

Many of our products have been mentioned briefly on the Home Page. Our visitors are usually surprised to find such a great variety of real farm stall products at Daggaboer. We deliberately don’t stock typical commercial products like chips, Kit Kat type of sweets or cigarettes etc. Our consumables are all homemade and there is something to suit most tastes – from goodies such as fudge, Turkish Delight, a good variety of cookies and crunchie koeksisters for the sweet tooth to rusks, cheese straws and our famous biltong and dry wors.

You won’t find our bottled jams & preserves on the shelves of your local supermarket and we are unreservedly proud of the quality of our products. We strongly dislike empty shelves, so apart from a dazzling variety you will also find ample supplies. Our friendly and helpful staff will offer you a basket which we refer to as a ‘Karoo Trolley’, since we haven’t discovered the wheel yet. They will also be able to assist you in finding your favourite jam or preserve en provide you with interesting information on the various products such as how to use Prickly Pear syrup, Boeremeisies (apricots preserved in Witblits), our delightful Slap Hakskeentjies etc.

Our hand stitched genuine sheepskin slippers are known country wide and made right here on the farm. We use only first grade, beautifully tanned sheepskin and sizes vary from kiddies no. 2 to men’s no. 13. These wonderful winter companions will last you for years, unless of course Fido develops a taste for chewing them. One visitor was surprised to find that we were quite willing to sell her only a left foot slipper because her mother is an amputee. The slipper’s mate became the home of another guest’s parrot that had developed a particular affinity for his own slippers.

Mohair is also very popular and since the Eastern Cape is the primary production source (66% of total production) in South Africa, we stock an exquisite range of Mohair scarves, knee blankets, men’s and ladies’ socks, beanies and mittens. Mohair socks are cool in summer and warm in winter and once you’ve been wearing them, you will never want to change again. The mohair knee blankets are very light but amazingly warm in winter and virtually everlasting. In many households they replace the need for heaters when watching TV in winter. Did you know that South Africa produces almost 60% of the total world mohair production?

There are gifts galore to select from. A great favourite is Isobel’s double thick knitted Tea Cozies – an article that is very much the vogue nowadays. We are also stockists of the world brand Schrade Old Timer & Henry knives – these knives have been made for more than a century and because we obtain them directly from the importer, we can offer you very reasonable prices.

Our Menu

At a squeeze we can seat approximately 40 guests – 30 on the covered veranda where the tranquility of the Middle Karoo and beautiful mountainous scenery is soaked up. In winter time the coffee bar inside where our thick hearty farm soup is served directly from the old Dover Defy wood stove, is a great favourite.

We know that when people travel, they do not like endless delays at a stopover. Our fare is thus simple but very tasteful and we pride ourselves on very quick service! Most popular of all is certainly the Roosterkoek which is accompanied by fine biltong, biltong pate, jam & cheese for you to select your own spread. Now you’ve got to understand the Roosterkoek – it is a bun (ours are xxx in size) made on the fire. It is a traditional braai favourite in the Eastern Cape where they have not yet discovered the delights of putu or stywe pap like the Valies & Free Staters have done since the Great Trek. The Roosterkoek is substantial (definitely not pumped up with a bicycle pump) and many of our visitors will endure severe hunger pangs gnawing away at Colesberg, for another two and half hours to get at Daggaboer for their Roosterkoek!

If you feel that life is unsure and that you should start with pudding first, you should consider the very generous slices of lemon meringue, cheese cake or milk tart.
