Through our diverse backgrounds and experience, we bring together a wide range of complimentary expertise in intellectual property and related fields. Our people have represented some of the largest companies in the world and are very effective in working with all types of clients, from individuals through the highest levels of corporate management. We have extensive experience in successfully representing both U.S.-based clients and non-U.S. clients doing business internationally. As a result, we are particularly experienced in representing clients operating across countries and cultures and adept at bridging the cultural and linguistic gaps that all too often complicate international business and legal relationships.
In the area of international trade controls, we bring many years of experience to assist our clients in understanding and complying with this comprehensive regulatory scheme. We regularly counsel companies concerning many diverse issues such as export and technology transfer controls, embargoes and sanctions programs, customs and import regulations, labeling requirements, grey market, jurisdiction, conflicts of laws questions and human resources concerns in hiring foreign nationals. We help our clients identify business risk generators to ensure regulatory compliance and avoidance of inadvertent violations, and we guide our clients through risk-based judgments concerning many activities that could potentially violate of one or more regulations. Where there have been regulatory violations or there is enforcement activity, we work with our clients and the relevant government officials to resolve the matter as expeditiously as possible with minimum adverse consequences.
The firm’s principal, Dennis H. Cavanaugh, has substantial experience in assisting clients in developing and protecting their intellectual property assets, including managing international portfolios, supervising enforcement programs, anti-counterfeiting and stopping grey market goods. He regularly counsels clients in clearing, registering, licensing and expanding their intellectual property assets in the United States and internationally. He has advised clients on copyright ownership, use, licensing and infringement. As a litigator, Mr. Cavanaugh has tried cases involving copyright and trademark infringement, transnational ownership of businesses and breach of contract. His clients range from individual entrepreneurs and creators to multinational companies.
Mr. Cavanaugh also regularly acts as outside general counsel for many clients. This encompasses coordination of local counsel advising on foreign laws and regulations, corporate structuring, immigration, tax planning and compliance with U.S. government compliance, disclosure and requirements, among others.
Prior to practicing law, Mr. Cavanaugh was an intelligence officer, in which capacity he was responsible for managing multimillion dollar projects with foreign government officials.
Mr. Cavanaugh received his J.D. degree from New York Law School in 1979 and is a member of the New York Bar and numerous Federal courts.
