An insight in Glastonbury 2015

Each year we tend to get around 150+ enquiries from excited Glasto ticket holders looking to hire a motorhome for the event. For us, this weekend is the start of ‘summer’ and I always look forward to meeting our hirers and hearing about their plans and who they are looking forward to seeing the most over the ‘Glasto Weekend’!

So, motivated by the euphoria I did some research into Glastonbury and wanted to share it with you….

Glastonbury festival was the dream of that of Michael Eavis, who owns Worthy Farm in Pilton, he was inspired in 1969 by a festival in Bath in which Led Zeppelin were the headliners.

So in 1970 Michael first hosted Glastonbury Fayre at Pilton, the charge was just £1 and with this you even had free milk included! The first Glasto was launched just one day after the death of Jimi Hendrix, it was host to1500 people, and was headlined by Tyrannosaurus Rex - stepping in for the Kinks who failed to show up.

The Pyramid Stage was first erected in 1981 and when it wasn’t used as a stage it was a cow shed. However, in 1994 the original Pyramid stage burnt down but the organisers put up a temporary one so the festival could continue. The Pyramid is host to the main headliners. However, in 2000 a young couple, who had written to the festival organisers, got married in front of a few festival revellers who were still awake, and these included various acts including Keith Allen!

The first proper toilets arrived in 1983!

Another memorable year was in 2009 when festival goers heard about the death of Michael Jackson, and the whole festival paid homage to him as Lilly Allen took the stage with a white glove.

Some Glasto Stats and Figures….
• Lifetime ticket sales are £325m.
• Prices have risen from £1 to £225.
• Total attendance to all festivals today (including this year) is 2.8m – same as entire population of Mongolia
• The site has grown from 900 acres to 1.4 square miles and the perimeter is 8.5 miles (1/3 of distance from Dover to Calais).
• All tickets sold out this year in 25 minutes.
• This year Glastonbury’s stages will host 2000 acts.

This year’s headliners include; Kanye West, who will arrive with wife Kim via helicopter, Lionel Richie, The Who and the Foo Fighters are to the replaced by the fantastic Florence and the Machines!
