Introduction
The air pouch is developed simply by subcutaneous (s.c.) injection of sterile air into the intra-scapular area of the back of a rat or mouse. This procedure induces the proliferation of cells that stratify on the surface of the cavity to form a cellular lining consisting of macrophages and fibroblasts, which is morphologically similar to that found in synovial cavity. Later, local inflammation can be induced by injecting with carrageenan solution or other irritants (e.g. LPS, zymosan or bradykinin) into the air pouch. https://www.creative-biolabs.com/drug-discovery/therapeutics/carrageenan-air-pouch-model.htm
