Introduction
Several weeks ago our government informed us that the recession that has plagued our economy for the past two years is now officially over. But on the off chance that this news has not yet radically transformed your financial life, and assuming that like most Austinites you still enjoy dining out at restaurants, I've got some good news about a place where you can get some real bang for your buck. Welcome to Cannoli Joe's at 4715 Highway 290 West.
Cannoli Joe's is a restaurant that takes you back to old Italy. The main hallway looks like a street in Verona or Florence and along this 'streetâ? lie different food vendors. A bruschetta over here, four different pasta dishes over there, sausage and peppers and on it goes. As my grandmother used to say, this is an abudanza of Italian delights. And each of the dishes, unlike on your average buffet, is prepared fresh by a chef just behind the scenes. Best of all Cannoli Joe's offers one reasonable price for unlimited trips down 'la stradaâ?.
The appetizers and salads at Cannoli Joe's immediately convey a sense of freshness and quality. The aforementioned Bruschetta is adorned with either white beans or pesto pomodoro. Both are crispy and very flavorful. I like the Crispy Polenta made with jalapenos and cheddar cheese as well. The Insalata Greco (Greek salad) has great taste and is zesty and redolent of beautiful aged feta cheese. The Caesar Salad is equally delightful, The fresh romaine lettuce is always crisp and that's the real key. The Minestrone Soup bears further evidence that unlike so many buffets, not a thing at Cannoli Joes tastes like it came out of a can or a box.
The pasta station is almost impossible to pass by. We're talking individually prepared dishes here. I love the Rigatoni Bolognese. The sauce is rich and luxurious and the pasta is al dente. The Farfalla Primavera is a favorite of vegetarians but appeals to the carnivore as well. And the Spaghetti Pomodoro: well the fall is the perfect time for this simple yet elegant dish composed of tomatoes, basil, garlic (of course) and pasta.
Moving down 'la stradaâ? we come to some of the more substantive offerings at Cannoli Joe's. I'm always dishing out a generous portion of the grilled Sausage and Peppers. This timeless classic still resonates and is well represented here. The Sicilian Spiced Rotisserie chicken is another great dish. The chicken is always tender, moist and delivers a powerful flavor punch. And the dish finishes beautifully on the palate. Equally tempting is the Grilled Vegetable Lasagna Verde. What a nice dish. And the baked Ziti Primavera has that distinctive taste that fans of baked ziti demand. Spot on! Also the Pork Osso Busco has the requisite tenderness and subtle flavors that make this dish a must try.
You want more? Well why not. The pizza station will appeal to the kids and I've seen more than a few parents availing themselves as well, The timeless Margherita which dates back to 19th century Naples is well presented here. And of course there's a nod to Texas with the Jalapeno and Pepperoni pizza. The crust is crisp and the flavor in tact.
And the namesake cannoli is presented in several variations at the dessert station, offering both the traditional and flavored varieties. There's also a White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake and a subtle Frangelico Bread Pudding, And they also serve a very decent Peppermint Ice Cream which is almost impossible to find these days. And so much more,
Cannoli Joe's is way past the Olive Garden and Macaroni Grill in terms of quality, And while it may not be Vespaio or La Traviata, it's not supposed to be. It's good, homemade Italian food at prices that won't wreck your budget.
