Introduction
CRY has compiled some statistics on the situation of children in India. This is based on our experience of working on a range of children’s issues across India. The statistics are grim. What is worse is that very little is known of what it means to be part of such horrific numbers. The task before us is huge and we at CRY believe that for real change to happen, every member of our society should take responsibility to change the lives of these children permanently.
While the reality in India may be far from ideal, we at CRY believe that every child has a right to dream.
Child labour, somehow, has become a social norm that we accept and tolerate in our society. This exploitative and abusive practice will continue unless society adopts a zero tolerance attitude towards it. Children continue to be exploited and abused because the State and people do not address children’s issues comprehensively and effectively.
Child Education is one of the main agents of change. When a child is able to go to school today, he or she sets off a cycle of positive change. An educated child stays away from early marriage, avoids exploitation and becomes strong and independent. As children grow, they are able to make better choices for themselves and influence the communities they live in.
