Better Addiction Care

Miami and its beaches are well-known for having a vibrant nightlife culture. From beach clubs, rooftop bars, and wineries, tourists will never run out of things to do and places to visit even after the sun has set. However, Miami’s active party culture also sets the perfect stage for alcohol and drug abuse. This can be attributed to easier access to illicit drugs and a lifestyle of binge-drinking. Rates of alcohol and drug addiction in Miami have continuously been on the rise over the past few years.

In a survey conducted by Miami-Dade County’s Mobilizing for Action Through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) from 2013 to 2018, it was found that 18.4 percent of Miami-Dade residents were current alcoholic beverage binge-drinkers. On the other hand, according to a 2015 report by the National Drug Early Warning System (NDEWS), marijuana was the primary drug of use that was reported by 91% of adolescents who entered addiction treatment programs in Southeast Florida, while cocaine remained to be the most abused drug among those older than 35 years of age.

In an attempt to curb the rates of drug and alcohol abuse, Miami has passed various state laws and regulations and have made the fight against drug abuse a priority of the law federal and state enforcement. These laws target both illicit drugs and prescription drugs that are dispensed illegally or used as illegal club drugs. Federal law and state statutes provide for serious felony drug crime charges including but not limited to drug trafficking, distribution, or conspiracy, money laundering, and drug importation. The gravity of the sanction to be imposed on the offender is decided based on the drug type, amount in weight, and intended use of the drug.
