In 1978 Ian Swart temporarily took over his father’s rug shop in South Yarra Melbourne. Already a successful entrepreneur within the fashion industry he instantly saw the vast potential in handmade rugs fell in love with the product and took off to India to investigate. The following year Ian established Hali Rugs and within 15 years had built a nationwide chain of retail stores as well as establishing Hali as the principal rug supplier to the David Jones Rug Department.
