The Mel's drive-in of Hollywood has a fascinating and colorful history. It is located in the historic Max Factor building a beauty salon whose client list at one time included Jean Harlow Bette Davis and most of the major movie actresses in Hollywood. Mel's now shares the building with the Hollywood History Museum home of 5 000 Hollywood exhibits and artifacts such as Hannibal Lecter's cell and the sets of Moulin Rouge. The Geary Boulevard Mel's drive-in was the second of the "Next Generation" restaurants to open and it was quick to experience the success of its Lombard street sibling. This Inner Richmond restaurant is unique as it is located on the site where one of the original Mel's operated from 1953-1974. Steven Weiss current co-owner and son of Mel's namesake Mel Weiss was a soda jerk there and was meticulous in replicating the details of its design for the present-day incarnation.
